The band was loosely formed by 1971, but came together under the Polydor label (then under Deutsche Grammophon) after being introduced by leftist-journalist and Baader-Meinhof associate Uwe Nettelbeck who had been asked by Polydor to find a German band that could compete with the British and American bands that dominated the scene.

Erwin Schrott was born in Uruguay in 1972 and won the Operalia competition in 1998. In the year 2000 he made his debut at the New York Metropolitan Opera inLa Bohème, in 2001 at the Teatro Real in Madrid in Verdi´s Requiem. In the meantime, he is a welcome guest at international opera houses, for example at La Scala, at the Arena di Verona, the Washington Opera, the Opera National de Paris, at the Liceu in Barcelona, at the Oper Zurich, in Nice and Hamburg, at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, at the Teatro Colon Buenos Aires, the Theatre de La Monnaie, the Los Angeles Opera and the Salzburg Festival. He has celebrated great triumphs as Banquo ( Macbeth ), Sparafucile ( Rigoletto ), Don Giovanni and Leporello ( Don Giovanni ), Colline, Figaro and Conte d’Almaviva ( Le nozze di Figaro ), Mephistopheles ( Damnation de Faust ), Sir Giorgio ( I puritani ), Mephistopheles ( Faust ), Rodolfo ( La sonnambula ), Escamillo ( Carmen ).
He made his debut at the Wiener Staatsoper in 1999 as Banquo and has since sung Figaro, Mephistopheles, Conte d’Almaviva and Leporello here.
